Thieves ransack East Kilbride cat cafe, leaving staff gutted

Staff at an East Kilbride cafe say they have been left "absolutely gutted" following an overnight break-in.

The Purrfect Cafe on Montgomery Street was targeted in the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving one of the windows completely smashed.

Thankfully, all the cats were unharmed during the incident, however, items have been stolen from the premises, which was opened by Ghada Abdelaziz last year.

Police have confirmed they are looking into the incident, however, no arrests have been made at this time.

Posting to Facebook, the cafe said: "We're absolutely gutted to share that our café was broken into overnight, and as you can see, there's quite a bit of damage. Thankfully, all of our cats are safe and well, which is the most important thing.

"They stole a few things from the café, but we're counting our blessings and are incredibly grateful that no one was hurt and our furry little family is safe.

"We're so sorry to everyone who had booked in with us today for any inconvenience caused. We're doing everything we can to get things cleaned up and sorted as quickly as possible.

"A massive thank you to everyone who has come down to check on us, offered support, helped clean up and just generally been there for us. Your kindness means more than you know.

"We'll keep you updated as we figure out the next steps. Thank you all for your patience, understanding and support."

Fans of the cafe were quick to show support for the business, with many shocked at the act.

One person said: "What utter scumbags. Poor babies must have been terrified glad there (sic) okay. So sorry about the amount of damage and taken property. Hugs and loves."

Another added: "So glad nobody got hurt. Absolutely disgusted anyone could commit such a mindless and selfish act."

And a third said: "Sending love to the kitties and you all at this difficult time. Love the cafe, and this is horrible news to hear. What's wrong with some people? Hope to visit as soon as you are back on your feet."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 7.25am on Tuesday, 11 August, 2026, we received a report of a break-in to and theft from a premises on Montgomery Street, East Kilbride.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 0593 of 11 August, 2026."
